Formula E is a new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series.
The first season commenced in September 2014, and continues until June 2015. The championship competes in the heart of ten of the world's leading cities, including London, Beijing and Miami, racing around their iconic landmarks. For the inaugural season ten teams, each with two drivers, will go head-to-head creating a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans.
It represents a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades, serving as a framework for research and development around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting sustainability.
From season two, Formula E will operate as an 'open championship', allowing teams and manufacturer's the opportunity to showcase their own electrical energy innovations. Working to the technical specifications set out by the FIA, teams will focus their efforts on improving and developing battery technology in the hope that this will filter into the everyday electric vehicle market.
The championship centres around three core values - energy, environment and entertainment, and is a fusion of engineering, technology, sport, science, design, music and entertainment. All combining to drive the change towards an electric future.
Tradition and Innovation
ABT Sportsline is 118 years of power and innovation. Driven by a brilliant idea, Johann Abt from Kempten in Bavaria, founded a smithy in 1896. He converted coaches in a way that allowed them to be used even in the harsh winter conditions of this southern German region. The company has consistently evolved since then, but one thing remains unchanged. ABT Sportsline continues to operate as a family run business that today has around 170 employees.
Hans-Jürgen Abt represents the fourth generation at the helm. The company has evolved into the world’s leading tuner of cars from the Volkswagen Group. Whether Audi, Volkswagen, Seat or Škoda, ABT in Germany and its worldwide network of partners in around 50 nations, is the first place for customers to turn to for an extra dose of sportiness at top quality, combined with a manufacturer’s warranty.
Motorsport in their Blood
ABT Sportsline is one of the most successful motorsport teams in Germany and Europe, the company's motorsport history dating back six decades, and starting with Johann Abt’s first race wins in the 1950's. The first ABT victory on record was the one achieved on a sand track in 1950. It was followed by victories and titles in touring car, sports car and formula racing. ABT Sportsline holds victories and titles in all circuit racing categories.
2009 is the year that has gone down as most successful in the company’s history to date. Timo Scheider of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline won the DTM (marking the third title in succession), Christian Abt won the ADAC GT Masters in the Audi R8 and rookie, Daniel Abt won in the ADAC Formula Masters.
The Team Director and CEO of ABT Sportsline GmbH today is Johann Abt’s son, Hans-Jürgen Abt, and the next generation is on the way to continuing ABT’s success story. After years in Formula 3 and GP3 Hans-Jürgen Abt’s son, Daniel, now competes in the GP2, held as a supporting event of F1, and the Formula E race series.
